MACON, Ill. — After trading the lead three times in the last minute of the race, Kevin Thomas Jr. held off fellow Toyota driver Tanner Carrick to win Saturday night’s POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League feature at Macon Speedway.
The win is the third for Thomas with Toyota power this season and the fourth for Petry Motorsports, which also captured a second podium finish with Jerry Coons Jr., who placed third. Thomas also finished second earlier in the day in USAC Silver Crown competition at the Springfield Mile.
For much of the race, it appeared that the 16-year-old Carrick was headed to his third win of the year as he went straight from the pole position into the lead ahead of Tyler Thomas, Zach Daum, Maria Cofer, Jason McDougal and Thomas Jr.
The top three maintained their positions through the first six laps before McDougal overtook Daum for third on lap seven, with Thomas Jr. moving past Cofer for fifth on the same lap.
One circuit later, Thomas Jr. would capture the fourth spot from Daum and just before the midway point of the 30-lap event, moved ahead of McDougal for third-place, while Carrick maintained his grip on the top spot with Tyler Thomas in tow.
As the laps began to wind down, Thomas Jr. started his charge as he overtook Thomas for second on lap 24 and then set his sights on Carrick, who had held the lead throughout. On lap 25, Thomas Jr. finally made his move to take the lead, but Carrick wasn’t going away easily.
The Keith Kunz Motorsports driver re-took the lead on lap 26 and held it through lap 27 on the one-fifth mile oval as the cars continued to run laps at under 11 seconds.
Finally, Thomas Jr. fought his was past on lap 28 and went on for the victory. Carrick would finish second, Coons was third, Thomas was fourth and McDougal gave Petry three of the top-five finishers with a fifth.
Championship leaders Tucker Klaasmeyer and Ryan Robinson struggled early and were never factors as Robinson placed 14th and Klaasmeyer was 16th as his point lead fell to just 50 points with 10 races remaining.
In other action, Jordan Howell won the POWRi Speedway Motors Micro Sprint Series event. Dakota Ewing was a winner in the local pro late model class. Terry Reed (street stocks) and Adam Webb (hornets) also picked up victories.
