SAPULPA, Okla. — Ryan Timms logged his name into the record books as the winner of the 500th POWRi National Midget League in series history by wiring the field in Wednesday night’s Sooner State Showdown at Creek County Speedway.
After rallying from seventh to win the night’s first of three heat races, the Oklahoma City racer capitalized on the pole starting position to lead all 30 circuits of the main event around the qurter-mile clay oval en route to the $3,000 triumph aboard the Keith Kunz Racing JBL Toyota-powered No. 67 machine.
Timms flashed under the checkered flag with a 1.555-second advantage over 12th-starter Jade Avedisian, who slipped by Zach Daum in the closing stages for runner-up honors.
“I could see the bottom had grip at the beginning, but with the top tilled I knew it had a bunch of speed up there,” Timms explained after his fourth midget triumph of the season and first in POWRi action. “I stayed committed up there until I started to smell the rubber and moved low.”
Timms outgunned fellow front row starter Hayden Reinbold at the drop of the green flag with third-starter Daum making his way into second after a dozen laps as Avedisian climbed her way to third by the time a red flag flew at the midway point when Daison Pursley got upside down in turn three.
Making his way to the bottom of the track over the final half of the race, Timms raced on to the checkered flag as Avedisian swiped second away from Daum.
Cannon McIntosh charged from 16th to capture fourth with Gavin Miller advancing eight positions to round out the top five.
