INDIANAPOLIS — Chili Bowl Nationals winner Tanner Thorson and the team he won it with, Reinbold Underwood Motorsports have gone their separate ways.
Thorson won multiple USAC sprint car and midget races in the familiar No. 19 car last season and kicked off this year’s campaign by winning the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals at Tulsa (Okla.) Expo Raceway.
However, a winged sprint car program was added to the team’s operation this season, with limited results through the first two months of the season.
Thorson and Reinbold Underwood Motorsports confirmed the split on Twitter.
“I have decided to explore other opportunities and part from Reinbold Underwood Motorsports. I am very appreciative of everything that Andy, Tammy, Rex and Todd have done for me and won’t forget all the good memories the team had together,” Thorson wrote. “Unfortunately, I had to make this decision but I’m trying to better myself and my winged racing. I know I can win at the top level. I just need the right opportunity.
“Connor, A.J. and Maison have become family to me and I am grateful for the hard work they have put in toward me and my racing. We have had a lot of success in the midget and non-winged sprint car with RUM but I am looking to further my career in a winged sprint car.”
Reinbold Underwood Motorsports plans to announce a new driver later in the week.
“We are thankful for the time spent racing with Tanner Thorson as we earned great accomplishments as a team. With that said the decision to part ways has been made. We wish Tanner the best of luck and much success with his career moving forward,” read the team’s statement. “We will be at Terre Haute this Friday and Saturday with the USAC National sprint cars. Driver to be announced later this week. The plan to compete in midget, winged sprint car and non-winged sprint car racing in 2022 still remains. We are excited to see where the remainder of the season takes us.”
