“It’s becoming unheard of to be the owner, driver and crew chief of your own deal. That’s how my dad did it and that’s how I’ve also done it,” he said. “When I was 18, every dollar I made working — I always had a full-time job, I did anything that I could to make money. Every dime I put into my racing.
“I was able to do one car, but the biggest thing was help with a motor. That was completely out of my realm. Then, Mosites Motorsports (a powersports dealership in North Versailles, Pa.) gave me my first big break on that. Doug Mosites believed in me, but he made me work for it. He made me come to him with an actual marketing proposal and told me I had to earn it. He is still my biggest supporter to this day and it’s been amazing to see how far things have come.”
Lynch’s effort — and his on-track performance — took a major step forward this season after Sye Lynch Racing joined forces with Baughman Motorsports.
“Racing is a very tough sport. It’s tough to get to the top, it’s tough to stay on top and it’s easy to fall at any point,” Lynch noted. “You see that all the way from the Outlaws to the All Stars, to even local racing in different areas around the country. I just want to keep growing as a driver and I really am thankful to be partnered with the Baughman family and Baughman Motorsports. They took a step back to be affiliated with us this year and you never know what that could transition into.
“I take pride in the fact that we’ve never actually buckled down and competed for points. We’ve tended to travel as much as we possibly can. I feel like we, especially this year, have been competitive at these tracks we have been able to travel to,” Lynch continued. “Going to Knoxville, going to Eldora, as a smaller team with crew guys that all have full-time jobs, to be able to compete against the best in the world is a great accomplishment that a lot people don’t truly see.”
Lynch says it’s “pretty amazing” that his grandmother is a member of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.
“I hear new things every week about her achievements. Just when you think you know everything she’s done, I swear you hear new stories,” he said. “So many people look up to her. Everyone that I know in sprint car racing knows her, or at least knows of her, and knows what she’s done. Back in her day, women didn’t really have a place in racing and for her to do what she did I think is just incredible.”
When he talked with SPEED SPORT, Lynch was in the early stages of finalizing his plans for next season.
“The meetings are starting to happen right now,” he said “We are taking a deeper approach as far as what do we want to do. It’s always been a dream of mine to race on a tour, but nowadays there are so many higher-paying shows in different areas that I believe you can hit 70 to 80 shows a year and not have to be tied to a series. That’s what we’re looking at. The Baughman family is still a great supporter and Mosites is very excited about what we have going on. My partners are the greatest right now and I think the future looks very promising for us.” n
