Sweet, KKR ‘Kept Plugging Away’ To High Limit Title

A familiar face hoisted the championship trophy following High Limit Racing’s inaugural season as a national touring series.

Brad Sweet and Kasey Kahne Racing secured their sixth straight national sprint car title Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway, where Sweet finished 19th.

Prior to joining High Limit’s tour, Sweet won five consecutive championships with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.

As a co-owner of High Limit alongside his brother-in-law and 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson, Sweet entered the season unsure how the change of scenery would bode for he and his No. 49 KKR team.

“You never know what you’re gonna do in a new series,” Sweet began. “We had a lot of momentum with the Outlaw tracks, kinda got used to that schedule.

“We weren’t sure what to expect over here. We had to go to a lot of new tracks this season, see a lot of new things, but it was really refreshing, a lot of fun. Different group of drivers, very competitive, a lot of driving really hard. A lot of young guys that want it.

“It was fun to race in the series for sure. Really gratifying to win the inaugural championship. My crew guys worked hard all year.”

Sweet capped off the season with a 297-point lead over Tyler Courtney, who won the Midweek Money Series title over Sweet via a tiebreaker.

The KKR driver secured the season-long title on the strength of 10 wins, the only driver in the series to reach double-digit victories. That included a three-race winning streak prior to Saturday’s finale at Texas.

Sweet attributed he and his team’s success to their extensive experience.

“I kinda understand how it goes,” Sweet said. “Doing this for as long as I have, I know that there’s the ups and downs of the road and when you’re off with your car a little. Even tonight, we were off and we’d been lights out for the last six or eight nights.

“It shows how hard it is, how good you have to be with reading the race track and making decisions with your crew chief. I think just being in the experiences I’ve been in, with the group that I’m with, we don’t ever get too worked up,” Sweet continued.

“We kinda knew what we’re capable of, just kept our heads down, kept plugging away through the bad times and obviously here we are celebrating.”
