TULARE, Calif. — Dominic Scelzi and Corey Day have battled it out all season long at several venues on the West Coast.
The duo spent Saturday night dueling at the Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway with Scelzi coming out on top in the Kings of Thunder 25-lap feature event.
Scelzi started from the pole alongside Tim Kaeding in the Williams Motorsports No. 0. Day started fourth but it would be Scelzi leading all 25 laps.
The first caution occurred early when Grant Champlin and Mariah Ede spun in the middle of turn three and four. The next slowdown was charged to Kaleb Montgomery who spun in the first turn in front of half the field while running in the seventh spot. Miraculously no one made contact with the No. 3, which ended up crossways on the track.
Gauge Garcia lightly tagged the first turn wall to bring out yet another caution. He was able to refire and join the tail of the field.
Each slow down bunched the field and gave the fast duo of Kaeding and Day an opportunity at Scelzi who would power away. Just past halfway, Day got around Kaeding and slowly closed in on Scelzi.
Lapped traffic came into play, but the wile Scelzi made the right choices and brought the Scelzi Motorsports No. 41 to the checkered flag first. Day settled for second with Kaeding filling out the podium.
Davey Pombo won the 15 lap IMCA Western RaceSaver feature.
