MARYSVILLE, Calif. — Two spectators were killed when a sprint car ran into a crowded pit area at full speed Saturday night at Marysville Raceway Park.
The 360 sprint car driven by Chase Johnson suffered a mechanical problem and veered off the track into the pit area striking and killing two bystanders.
Ironically, one of the dead was a 14-year-old cousin of Johnson and the other was a 68-year-old car owner. Names have yet to be disclosed.
The event was sanctioned by the Civil War Sprint Car Series and was cancelled after the tragedy.
On its Facebook page, the Marysville Raceway Park posted, “Our thoughts and deepest prayers go out to everyone. Out of respect we will not elaborate on details. We ask everyone to respect each other and the families.”
More details will be posted when available.
