STOCKTON, Calif. — Dylan Huchison won the 40-lap Gunslinger Sprint Car Series feature at the Stockton 99 Speedway on Saturday night.
His No. 8 black and yellow sprinter bested Audra Sasselli and Eric Humphries in the opening night of a two-night series at the famed quarter-mile paved oval.
Huchison started on the outside front row of the 13-car starting field. He passed polesitter Justin Kawahata on the 14th circuit and held off a late race challenge from the fast moving Sasselli.
Austin Carter brought out the race’s first caution when he did a solo spin in the first turn. On lap five, Cody Jessop became the race’s first retiree when he pulled in with a car which fought gremlins all evening. Matt Elliot would bring out a caution on the 7th circuit when he spun coming out of the fourth turn. His car got refried and he joined the tail of the field.
Sasselli passed Humphries for the third spot after she started from the sixth position. Huchison made his move around Kawahata’s No. 45 on the 14th lap. Just passed the half way mark, Sasselli moved into the second spot and set her eyes on Huchison. The two mastered lapped traffic but with 12 cars still running, passing opportunities were minimal.
Huchison took the checkered flag and shoot off the pistols in Gunslinger fashion in his victory lane salute to the fans.
Jesse Love won the 30 lap Bay Cities Racing Association midget feature after an intense battle with Chad Nichols.
Toni Breidinger led only 4 of the 20 lap Ford Focus midget feature but took the win over Adam Lemke and Dillon Tucker.
