Golobic Is Stockton Dirt Track Star

STOCKTON, Calif. — Shane Golobic survived a late race challenge to win the Sprint Car Challenge Tour Series 30-lap Salute to LeRoy VanConett feature at the Stockton Dirt Track Saturday night.

Cole Macedo dogged Golobic for the last 10 laps of the race and at one point briefly took the lead from the No. 17w only to have his pass negated when Colby Copeland spun to bring out the caution. The wake-up call made Golobic pick up his conservative pace when the two restarted.

With four laps to go, a second Copeland caution gave Macedo another shot at the leader, however he may have worn out his tires after marching through the field after a lap-two red flag.

Dustin Freitas brought out the red when he flipped off the turn 1 banking. He was not injured; however, his race was over. Macedo, running third at the time of the stoppage, decided to go to the work area.  After repairs, he would rejoin the tail of the 14-car field.

In the next 18 laps, the high flying Macedo would pass all but Golobic without the aid of any further cautions.

Macedo’s No. 56 picked off cars using the high lane around the ultra-fast fairground’s oval.  Macedo passed Golobic on a restart after the first Copeland spin. But another Copeland caused caution put Macedo back to the second spot.

For the last four laps, Golobic was able to pull away as Macedo wasn’t as fast. He was the only car to pose a threat to the polesitter Golobic.

The finish:

Shane Golobic, Cole Macedo, Tim Kaeding, Sean Becker, Tony Gualda, Kyle Offill, Kyle Hirst, Alex Justeson, Zane Blanchard, Colby Copeland, Geoff Ensign, Chelsea Blevins, Bret Barney, Chris Masters, Dustin Freitas
