STOCKTON, Calif. — Dominic Scelzi lived up to his nickname “The Dominator” by winning the 35-lap Sprint Car Challenge Tour season finale race at the Stockton Dirt Track on Saturday night.
Scelzi dueled early in the race first with Cory Eliason and then easily held off late challenges from Shane Golobic and Kyle Hirst.
With a third-place finish, Hirst picked up the inaugural season driver’s champion for the country’s newest 360 sprint car series. The Roth Motorsports No. 83 driver held a comfortable 86-point lead over second place Willie Croft and just needed to start the feature in order to secure the title.
Scelzi and Eliason brought the 22-car field to the green flag and it was the crafty Eliason who would take the lead early. The two young West Coast standouts diced each other for the first 12 laps until the race slowed for it’s first caution. Scelzi managed to pass Eliason on the same lap the yellow flag waved, which put Eliason back out front.
The two drivers continued their battle until lap 18 when Eliason went sailing off the fourth turn while leading, bringing out yet another yellow flag, but ending Eliason’s night. Scelzi showed his strength on the field but a Cody Hodgson flip in the second turn would bring out a red flag
Two more minor cautions slowed the race, but “The Dominator” built up a comfortable lead and went on to win easily over Golobic and a fast moving Hirst, who started ninth.
Forty-one cars were on hand in the pit area. Golobic was the fast qualifier with a time of 13.134 seconds.
