Courtney On Midweek Title Over Sweet: ‘Probably The First Championship He’s Lost In A While’

Over the last six years, it’s been near impossible for national sprint car competitors to keep Brad Sweet and Kasey Kahne Racing from winning championships.

After winning five straight titles with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series (2019-2023), Sweet and KKR hopped on the Kubota High Limit Racing trail this season.

With only three races left, Sweet is all but assured a title in the season-long battle as he holds a 278-point advantage over Rico Abreu.

However, Sweet lost a rare title fight as High Limit’s Midweek Money Series concluded on Tuesday night at I-70 Speedway. While the driver of the No. 49 sprint car won the feature at the Missouri half-mile, Tyler Courtney snagged the mini-series crown after finishing seventh in the feature.

“It’s awesome, Courtney began. “Probably a little bit of a consultation prize for not winning the national championship. We’ve had a great season up to this point. We’ve struggled over the past month-and-a-half. To come here tonight, lead the first few laps, feeling really good and then them guys just sucked my stickers off on the bottom.

“Just couldn’t quite get going down there. But, we’re going in the right direction.”

The Midweek Money Series trophy, however, has a caveat — Courtney and Sweet tied with 462 points each.

Both drivers tied in the first tiebreaker as each had one win in the series. It came down to the number of second-place finishes, which Courtney had the upper hand and banked the $25,000 prize.

“This will give us a little bit of momentum winning this and capping this off. Tying in the championship with Brad… I think this is probably the first championship he’s lost in a while,” Courtney smiled.

“I’ve tied in a few championships. I tied for my first USAC National championship, I tied in Ohio Speedweek last year too.

“I don’t know what it is with me and tying championships, but it’s worked out in my favor to come out on the winning side of it.”

High Limit competes at Missouri’s Lucas Oil Speedway on Wednesday night before a two-race finale at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track Oct. 11-12.
