Nine-Time NEMA Champion Drew Fornoro, 72

NEWTON, N.J. — Hall of Fame midget racer Drew Fornoro died May 1. He was 72 years old.

Fornoro is the winningest driver in the history of the Northeastern Midget Ass’n, with 85 feature victories to his credit. The majority of those triumphs came at the wheel of the No. 45 fielded by legendary car owner Gene Angelillo.

Fornoro won nine NEMA championships.

A second-generation racer, Drew Fornoro won at least one feature in 21 different seasons and also won events sanctioned by ARDC and USAC. He won three USAC features.

He was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2017, joining his father, Nick Fornoro Sr., who was previously inducted. Fornoro’s brother Nick Fornoro Jr. joined the Hall of Fame several years later.

Drew Fornoro’s wife, Anne, is the longtime publicist for A.J. Foyt Racing.
