INDIANAPOLIS – From the time Jessica Bean passed Grant Simpson to take the lead on lap 14 and Natasha Cox moved around Simpson on lap 19 into 2nd place, the USSA Mel Kenyon Midget Series race Friday at Indianapolis Speedrome was dominated by the two women drivers.
Cox shadowed Bean for the remainder of the race, actually pulling up to Bean’s tail tank several times to keep Bean on her toes.
Bean and Cox would finish one-two, marking the first time in USSA competition that two women would grab the top two spots.
As the previous winner and fast qualifier, series point leaders going into the Friday night show Travis Young and Dameron Taylor started at the back of the field providing the large UAW Night crowd with more tight racing as they tried to battle up through the field.
The two tangled exiting turn four, with Young getting the better of the racing exchange. Young would finish the night 3rd while Taylor would only manage 6th.
Early race leader Simpson and Cordy Horn battled for most of the race, with Horn passing Simpson with less than 10 laps to go to earn the fourth place honors, while Simpson rounded out the top five positions.
