CHOWCHILLA, Calif. — Tony Pombo led only a handful of laps during Sunday’s Outlaw Kart 450 race, but they were the important ones.
Pombo inherited the lead when frontrunners Ben Silliker and Josiah Ribeiro tangled with only four laps remaining in the 25-lap feature. Pombo held off T.J. Smith and Kristi Cornelious to win round No. 5 of the Sanders Barn Burner Series at the Chowchilla Fairgrounds pavilion.
Tylor Henson would finish fourth ahead of Evan Burrola. Ribeiro, having been in contention for most of the race would recover to finish sixth. Silliker, who had led the race up until the turn-four shunt, would bring his No. 24 car home in a disappointing eighth position.
Silliker and Ribeiro scored wins in their 10-lap heat races, setting up the front row feature starting spots. Silliker was the fastest of 13 karts that timed in. He turned a lap of 9.948 seconds around the fifth-mile flat track.
Aiden Larimer won the 15-lap Beginner Box feature
Mattix Salmon won the 15-lap Beginner Flat feature over Hailey Tavares and Talin Tores. Tores jumped to an early lead over Salmon who spun in the first turn of the opening lap, but kept going. Tores was a spin victim himself on lap eight while leading turning over the win to Salmon. C.J. Valentine, McKenzie Botelho and Kourtney McCormick rounded out the field.
The 20-lap Box Stock feature went to Mariah Ede who beat Kylee Schlessinger and Alex Silliker.
Mitch Cornelious won the 20-lap Clone feature over Ryan Fernandes and Stephen McCoulloch.
Richie Goulate beat his teammate Phil Goulart in the 20-lap Stock Appearing main. Goulate led the entire race from the pole of a very strong 15-kart field. KC Southern, Ryan Delisle and Stephen McCoulloch rounded out the top five.
