PONTOON BEACH, Ill. — Kyle Larson nearly took the lead in the 2011 USAC National Drivers Championship Friday night, wheeling the Keith Kunz Motorsports Toyota TRD Bullet to victory in the 25-lap Gold Crown Midget Nationals feature at Tri-City Speedway.

Larson’s win moved him to within just two points of NDC point leader Bryan Clauson, who finished fourth Friday night. The 50-lap “Gold Crown” finale is scheduled for Saturday night at Tri-City.

Trailing Larson at the checkered flag were Brad Sweet, Zach Daum, Clauson and Brad Kuhn.

Sweet led the first 13 laps and Larson took over on lap 14 and led the rest of the way for his fourth USAC Mopar National Midget Series triumph of the season.

As well, Larson ended Darren Hagen’s four-race winning streak at the three-eighths-mile dir track. The streak had included Thursday’s opener and all three races in last year’s Gold Crown Nationals. Hagen finished seventh on Friday.
