BEAUMONT, Texas — Wayne Johnson became the fifth different winner of the season in Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV competition Friday night at Golden Triangle Raceway Park.
Johnson earned $4,000 in the first race for the series at the track since 2002.
“We won the race here last time (Gulf South Regional event) and started with that same set up. We wasn’t very good and let Tony [Bruce] beat us there but I’m not sure what happened to him but I really thought we would’ve had something for him once we got into traffic” commented Johnson when reflecting on getting his first national tour victory of 2012.
Commenting on slower traffic and searching for lines, Johnson mentioned he was good on the high side but added, “I dang sure wasn’t going to give up that bottom.”
Starting 12th on the field, the City Vending 77x of Johnson wasted little time moving through the field; advancing into the top five on lap 10 while Travis Elliot and Tony Bruce Jr. battled for the race lead.
Bruce took the lead on lap eight and was in command until Johnson made his winning move on lap 22.
Brady Bacon finished second with Gary Wright third. Jason Johnson flipped in the B main and used a provisional to start 23rd, battling back to finish fourth. Brad Loyet was fifth.
