QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. – Sam Hafertepe Jr. stormed to his third-straight win with the ASCS Southwest Region during Friday night’s Copper Classic at Arizona Speedway.
Hafertepe led the final 16 of 25 laps for a .494-second victory ahead of Brock Zearfoss. Justin Sanders completed the podium from the 10th-starting position.
Zearfoss got the jump from the pole and led the first nine laps. In traffic on lap 8, Hafertepe cut his one-second gap to Zearfoss to .013 seconds at the start-finish-line. Hafertepe then took control to lead lap 10.
Mark Dobmeier drew a red-flag period on lap 11 in turn three and walked away unharmed. Hafertepe got through lapped traffic the rest of the way primarily rolling the bottom groove in turns one and two and the top groove on the other end of the race track.
Joel Myers Jr. finished fourth and Corey Day rounded out the top five. Robbie Price, J.J. Hickle, Austin McCarl, Chase Goetz and Max Mittry finished out the top 10. Through a B-Feature, Austin McCarl charged from 20th to eighth, with Chase Goetz and Max Mittry completing the top ten.
The Copper Classic concludes Saturday, Nov. 27. Racing begins at 6:35 p.m. Mountain Time.
