Will Brown Wins Thrilling Sandown 500

MELBOURNE, Australia — Repco Supercars Championship points leader Will Brown held off teammate Broc Feeney to score the victory in Sunday’s Penrite Oil Sandown 500.

With it being the series’ first endurance event of the season, Brown scored the victory with co-driver Scott Pye. Brown crossed the finish line 0.4747 seconds ahead of his Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate.

“God what a race, Scott did a mega job, I was a bit nervous at the start when they got underneath us and the 88 was leading,” Brown said.

“Those last laps were nerve wracking, I thought don’t put a foot wrong, because Broc’s going to be there and I know he’ll pounce, but it was awesome.

“I’m just so stoked to get this, a win here at Sandown, the first round of the enduros, it’s a bloody good way to start it, so thanks to all the guys and girls at Red Bull Ampol Racing.”

The event feature three safety car periods during the first half of the race.

James Golding and co-driver David Russell handed PremiAir Nulon Racing its first podium in Supercars with a third-place result. Matt Payne placed fourth with Garth Tander. Cooper Murray and Craig Lowndes completed the top five with Cam Waters and co-driver Moffat placing sixth after starting on the front row.

Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth placed seventh, allowing Mostert to stay within range of Brown heading into the famed Bathurst 1000. Mostert is 189 points behind Brown in the standings. Feeney is a distant 222 markers back of the top two.Â
