Am Drivers: Money, Speed & Desire

Remember the earlier comment about it being expensive to field a competitive car? Potter reports that it costs Magnus Racing between $50,000 and $75,000 to field a single GTD entry per race. The tire bill alone is more than $7,000.

Potter enjoys racing and estimates he has run more than 150 races during his career. He hasn’t taken his foot off the gas despite some lackluster years, and that’s a testament to his investment in time and money.

In fact, he briefly considered a plunge into the World Endurance Championship but backed off to spend more time with his family.

So why does Potter continue to drive and field a team.

“I have found in my 15 years of racing, I appreciate the chance to compete at a championship level,” he said. “I like that I can test me as a driver and what we as a team can do. We have had our successes truly as a team effort and we compete at a championship level. It’s a difficult thing to do.”

Potter suggested talking to George Kurtz, the “Mac Daddy” of Am drivers and team owners. SPEED SPORT made a concerted effort to contact Kurtz about his extensive involvement in racing, including Formula 1, but was told he simply didn’t have time for an interview. Like Roger Penske, Kurtz’s seat in the jet never gets cold.
