LONG BEACH, Calif. — Former CART Champion Jimmy Vasser overcame the usual 30-second handicap assessed to professional drivers in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity race on Saturday to take the overall victory, followed closely by Formula Drift Champion Tanner Foust.
The first of the Celebrity Drivers, actor Brian Austin Green, was actually leading when the race ran to its scheduled distance of 10 laps. But after a caution on lap eight, officials decided to extend the race three laps. Green fought off comedian Adam Carolla early on, then battled much of the race with actor Adrien Brody, taking the lead in the eighth lap and holding it to cross the finish line in his race-ready Scion tC just fractions of a second before Brody and actor Zachary Levi.
Green ran the race some 14 years ago, but admitted he wasn’t prepared, and didn’t take the training seriously the first time around. This time Green paid attention and it paid off. He was ecstatic after the race. “We all pushed each other and really battled,” said the new celebrity champ. “This is such a great group of people. We’ve all become really close friends under very cool circumstances. I’d be just as happy had Zach or Adrien won.”
“I’d be happier if I won” Brody deadpanned.
