DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – North Carolina resident John Stevenson, of Stevenson Motorsports, is the recipient of the 2013 Rolex Bob Snodgrass Award of Excellence.
The announcement was made during the traditional prelude to the Rolex 24 At Daytona – the Grand Marshal Dinner – which was held at the Daytona 500 Club and attended by 300 guests on Friday. From a short-list of four highly-successful team owners who competed in the 2013 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, a panel of motorsports professionals selected Stevenson. Stewart Wicht, President of Rolex Watch U.S.A., presented Stevenson with a specially-engraved Rolex Stainless Steel and Platinum Yacht-Master timepiece to commemorate the honor.
The award – supported by Gorsline Company, the premier insurer of high-risk professionals – has been presented to Bob Stallings (2010), Joe Sahlen (2011) and Peter Baron (2012).
“The Rolex Bob Snodgrass Award of Excellence is based around his ethics, his passion, and his mentality to do the right thing all the time,” said Harris Snodgrass, the son of Bob Snodgrass, who introduced Stevenson as the winner.
“The Rolex Bob Snodgrass Award of Excellence goes to a team owner or manager in the Grand-Am series who best exemplifies the qualities that he was known for,” added Harris. “They include his integrity in life, business and in racing; his passion for the sport of automobile racing, and his love for cars.”
Stevenson’s No. 57 Camaro GT.R racked up four wins in 2013 (at Barber Motorsports Park, Road Atlanta, Belle Isle Park and Watkins Glen Int’l) to place Stevenson Motorsports third overall for the year in the GT season standings – just one point out of second. His driving team of John Edwards and Robin Liddell were also third in the driver points for the season. In the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Edwards and co-driver Matt Bell in the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R, won at Road Atlanta and the Kansas Speedway to finish the season second overall in driver points, earning Stevenson Motorsports second overall in the GS team standings for 2013.
“This award is particularly significant to me as we all know Bob had a great passion for racing,” said Stevenson. “Bob was also a great car dealer for his entire life. I have 40-some years in the car business and great passion for racing, as you all do. I’ve got 10 years’ time in Grand-Am – from driver to team owner. Along the way I’ve met some great people, have had some great drivers, and my fair share of impostors.” Stevenson concluded by thanking the team who helped him get to where his in on the race side, adding special thanks: “to my racing partner for many, many years, my wife Susan. Most of the time she endorses what we’re doing, but not all of the time.”
