MONTEREY, Calif. – Christian Szymczak will sit on the inside of row one for both races of the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup doubleheader at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend.
Elliott Skeer set the second-fastest time, followed by Ara Malkhassian.
Szymczak, in the No. 34 ALARA Racing MX-5, stopped the watch at 1:42.286 (79.545 mph) on his way around the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course. Szymczak’s time was more 0.4 seconds clear of the next closest driver, Skeer, in the 30-minute session. Szymczak used his prior knowledge of the track to set the fast time.
“This is a peculiar track,” Szymczak said. “It’s got a lot of turns that require techniques that are a little unorthodox compared to other tracks. A lot of strange turn-in points and different lines that are required. Because of that it takes some extra time to learn.
“I had two races, here, last year in the MX-5 Cup series, two in the Barber Dodge Pro Series and, probably, eight in the Barber Dodge Western Series. So, I’ve had a total of 12 races here, which is quite a bit of track time.”

Alpinestars MX-5, logged the second-best time of the qualifying session with a 1:41.743 (79.188 mph).
“The car felt really good on sticker tires,” Skeer said. “The balance really came back to it, which I’m really happy about, because it wasn’t at that point this morning. The wonder is how it will be tomorrow morning on old tires.
