LE MANS, France — With just over an hour to go in the first qualifying session for the 82nd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche has come to the front for the first time in the run up to this great endurance race.
At the test weekend 11 days ago they were a chasing both the Audi R-18’s and the Toyota TS-040.
Young New Zealander Brandon Hartley turned a quick lap of 3:23.157. That was seven-tenths of a second quicker than the second Porsche 919 Hybrid.
The Toyota team, which has dominated the World Endurance Championship and has been quickest by a large margin in all the pre-event testing and today’s first free practice are third and fourth quick.
The fourth red flag of the day caused a 15 minute pause in the first official qualifying session. The session resumed with just over 1 hour and 10 minutes to go.
