PEORIA, Ariz. – The Winter Challenge resumed Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park with slightly different players involved, but the results in the IMCA modified division remained the same.
At the conclusion of the 25-lap IMCA modified main it was Ricky Thornton Jr. celebrating in victory lane for the third-straight race.
This one turned out much easier for Thornton than many people expected, with Hunter Marriott starting outside row one and Thornton starting in row four. Marriott led the initial eight laps with one Thornton pass for the lead canceled by a yellow.
Thornton raced from eighth to third during lap one and got past D.J. Shannon on lap five to take second and quickly closed on Marriott.
Using the topside around the Canyon quarter-mile, Thornton took the lead on lap nine and built a considerable lead en route to claiming another Canyon win.
Marriott raced with Shannon for much of the race until drawing away to claim second ahead of Shannon.
In IMCA Northern sport mods, Chase Rudolf made a three-wide drive through turn four work. As the middle car in the trio, Rudolf was at risk but successfully left turn four with the lead. A $750 paycheck was his reward.
The Winter Challenge will conclude on Super Bowl Sunday.
