PEORIA, Ariz. – Rick Ziehl and Ricky Thornton, Jr., were among the headliners in Saturday night’s Allscapes Back to School Special atop the third-mile Canyon Speedway Park clay oval by taking top honors in winged ASCS Southwest Sprint Car and IMCA Modified action, respectively.
While Ziehl and Thornton, Jr., enjoyed victory lane festivities, other winners on the night included Anthony Madrid in Viper Smart Start Pure Stock action, Paul O’Connor in Renegades and Ryan Hennessey in Dwarf Cars.
In ASCS Southwest Sprint Car competition, reigning champion Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, N.M., raced from the pole position to capture his second series win in as many CSP outings this season, taking the checkered flag ahead of Lance Norick with eighth-starter James Aragon, Casey Buckman and Bob Ream, Jr., rounding out the top five.
Holding a slim IMCA Modified points lead entering the night, Ricky Thornton Jr., rallied from the 14th starting position for his second CSP win of the year ahead of ninth-starter Jason Noll with Anthony Madrid, Jay Foster and Steve Simpson Jr., filling out the top five.
Madrid raced from sixth to snare his fourth Viper Smart Start Pure Stock feature win in the last five outings ahead of Chris McCurdy, Jr., Joe Vlasity, Mike Herrera and Steve Duffy.
Paul O’Connor put a halt to John Romero’s Renegade domination by taking the checkered flag after starting eighth while Romero fell one position short of a fifth consecutive win with runner-up honors from 10th as Trenton Setelin, Joe Flewelling and Mike Allen rounded out the top five.
In Dwarf Cars, Ryan Hennessey became the fourth different winner in as many CSP outings by racing from ninth for victory honors ahead of Jim Hock, Brian Stehr, Steve Kapaun and Mike Strobel.
