MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — A persistent drizzle and unseasonably cold temperatures caused the racing program featuring sprint cars and 358 sprints scheduled for Friday evening at Williams Grove Speedway to be canceled.
The Grove has not had much success on the first weekend in April in recent years and that is no April Fool’s joke.
Only one program scheduled on the first Friday in April has been completed over the last 10 years and that occurred in 2010. Ironically, Stevie Smith won the sprint car feature that night and Pat Cannon won in the 358 division. Smith and Cannon are the only two drivers who have been victorious at the Grove in 2011 having captured the openers in their respective divisions March 18.
Since 2002 seven programs were completely lost to the elements on the first Friday in April. In 2005 the sprint car feature was completed, but the late model feature was rained out. Both the sprint car and super sportsman features were rained out in 2006.
Williams Grove will try again April 8, when the super late models will share the card with the sprint cars.
