WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jason Myers turned the fastest lap during Friday night’s qualifying at Bowman Gray Stadium, placing him on the pole for the start of the Hayes Jewelers 200 for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series.
Myers was pleasantly surprised by his own performance.
“I really thought from practice laps that the No. 83 [of Tim Brown] and the No. 1 [of brother Burt Myers] were about a tenth of two better than we were. But when it counted, our car was good,” said Jason Myers.
Myers felt he and the team were lucky to even make it to the track, much less to qualify on the pole. They’ve been working on a brand new car and have also been dealing with motor issues.
“Our car is right out of the box. We got it from Troyer the last week in February – and it was just a bare chassis with a body on it,” said Myers. “We had to make all our brackets and do a lot of welding and cutting.”
After running some NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour events with only one good motor, Myers didn’t have a lot of time to get his Stadium ride set up.
“I put the motor in it last Sunday and we worked up until last night on it,” said Myers.
Brown, last year’s Modified champion, turned the second fastest lap and will start right beside Myers. Lee Jeffreys will start third, with Danny Bohn starting in fourth.
The top ten competitors have their positions locked in. The remaining competitors have the option of re-qualifying on Saturday to determine their starting spots.
Taylor Branch qualified on the pole for the 40-lap race for the Classic Muscle Sportsman Series. Now that the field is determined, competitors draw for starting position.
