IMCA To Sanction Mountain Creek

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — Weekly races at Mountain Creek Speedway will feature four IMCA divisions in 2012.

IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Smiley’s Racing Chassis Southern SportMods run on Friday nights starting March 16.

Point races continue through Sept. 28 on the quarter-mile black clay oval.

Co-owners and co-promoters of the former Grand Prairie Speedway are Jerrold Howell and Charlie Upchurch.

“The main reason why we’re sanctioning with IMCA is to give drivers another place to race for points,” explained Howell, a former Southern SportMod and street stock driver. “There are already a lot of Modifieds in this area and the SportMods are huge. You can race them all over Texas.”

“Stock Cars are a pretty good class and there are a lot of people driving them,” he added. “Hobby Stocks are a perfect entry level division.”

Howell and Upchurch, the IMCA Modified track champion at 85 Speedway in 2008, took over ownership of the dormant facility during the summer and hosted their first event at Grand Prairie in November.

In addition to considerable work on the racing surface, their to-do list before that show included remodeling concession stands and outbuildings, updating the seating and repairing gates and fences.

A new track website is now under construction.

“We’ve had a lot of people calling to thank us for going with IMCA,” reported Howell. “Apparently there were a lot of cars in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that raced on Saturday and stayed parked on Friday. We are getting mega good reports on going with IMCA and giving those drivers another place to race on Fridays.”

Located less than 45 minutes from Saturday night venue Kennedale Speedway Park, Mountain Creek will be part of the ButlerBuilt South Central Region for Modifieds and Stephenville Starter Southern Regions for Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks.

Points earned in all four divisions at Mountain Creek Speedway will factor toward IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing national championships.

The first event on the 2012 schedule at Grand Prairie is the March Breakout Let’s Go Race Showdown March 1-3.
