OSWEGO, N.Y. – Nicotra Racing and driver Otto Sitterly, the current Novelis Supermodified championship point leader, have been penalized 19 championship points for an infraction pertaining to the Supermodified Grand Prix conducted on July 5 at Oswego Speedway.
The penalty comes as a result of intentional contact with fellow championship contender Dave Gruel during the lap 16 caution period for a stopped Brandon Bellinger in the July 5 Supermodified Grand Prix. After the contact, Sitterly dived to the pit area with a reported broken rocker arm in the No. 7.
The contact is an infraction of page 14, rule 33, of the 2014-2015 Oswego Speedway rulebook stating:
“Any driver deemed to be rough riding, driving in an erratic manner, displaying unsportsmanlike conduct or disobeying race procedures, qualifying procedures, or flagging rules shall be subject to one or more penalties at the discretion of the Competition Committee.”
The determined penalty provides Sitterly and team with only 40 show up points for the July 5 main event and a full eight points for his fourth place finish in his qualifying heat.
The total of 48-points awarded is a 19-point deduction from the 67 points that Sitterly would have accumulated with his 18th place finish on July 5.
As a result of the assessed penalty, Sitterly now is scored with 569 points, leading Gruel by only four championship markers at 565 points.
