MALTA, N.Y. — The fans who turned out for Friday night’s program at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway hoping to see another feature as hard fought as Tuesday night’s Super DIRTcar Series “Big Show” battle between Brett Hearn and eventual winner Bobby Varin were not disappointed.
This time it was Ronnie Johnson vs. Kenny Tremont but the action was just as exciting.
Polesitter Chris Busta led off the break but Johnson, who lined up third, got inside him before the first lap was complete. Tremont, who started 12th, was on second-running Mike Perrotte by lap 10 and got by two laps later, but by then Johnson was out to a huge lead.
By lap 24 of the 35-lapper Tremont had cut Johnson’s lead to a car length and from that point on they dueled each other while negotiating heavy lapped traffic.
Tremont led part of lap 28 but Johnson got it right back. Then, when they got to the smoking mount of Rich Ronca, Johnson managed to get by first and got away from Tremont. The veteran didn’t clear Ronca until lap 33 and while he was back alongside the leader when the checkers flew, it was Johnson who got to the stripe first.
Brett Hearn was third from 14th, followed by Stewart Friesen, Perrotte, Don Ronca, Marc Johnson, Neil Stratton, Donnie Corellis and J.C. Flach.
Dan Older ran down Billy Smith for the pro stock win with DIRTcar traveler Rob Yetman home third.
