LUXEMBURG, Wis – Russ Scheffler has put a notch under his belt at Luxemburg Speedway. He picked up the $1,000 payday with his win over Mitch McGrath on Friday night in the WDLMA feature.
Race of Champion Victors were Todd Dart (Modifieds) John Heinz (Stock cars) and Brian Bruechert (Sportmods).
Jeremy Cota led from the drop of the green flag in the Sportmod feature. He started on the pole and took off without looking back. Brian Bruechert charged to second and sat idle until a caution set up a 10 lap dash to victory. Cota worked into the lead comfortably again with Bruechert contending with Tracy Wassenberg for second.
The duo would exchange the spot with Bruechert eventually winning it. Bruechert tracked down Cota and put the stronghold move on and into the lead. Bruechert would prevail and pick up the $350 first prize. Wassenberg would sneak past Cota for second. Josh Long finished fourth.
Barry VanStraten worked from the pole and into the lead early in the Stock car race of champions. Rod Snellenberger moved into the runner-up sport and put the pressure on. John Heinz used this to his advantage and tracked down the top pair. While Snellenberger moved into the lead Heinz quickly got underneath to make it three wide. Heinz made the pass into the lead with Snellenberger in tail. Snellenberger would test the back bumper of Heinz coming to the white flag. Troy Muench would make a run outside of Snellenberger. Heinz came around to the $350 victory with Muench claiming second. Snellenberger wound up third with VanStraten fourth.
Todd Dart and Mike Wedelstadt hooked up to make the Modified race of champions an exciting finish. Dart jumped out working the bottom with Wedelstadt way up top. Troy Jerovetz would run third with Benji LaCrosse slicing his way to fourth. The top four would run in a pack. The final laps would see the same with Dart getting the advantage at the line. Coming to the checkers Dart found just enough to take the $500 win away from Wedelstadt by a bumper. Jerovetz beat LaCrosse to the line to finish 3rd.
To be a top finisher at Luxemburg you almost needed to be running a Wild inc. chassis. Ron Berna won his heat race and drew the top spot to bring the field to green for the WDLMA main event. Mitch McGrath looked strong and worked his way to second by the lap 5 caution. McGrath used the top of the track to squeeze around Berna and into the lead on lap seven.
Russ Scheffler shot to the bottom of the track and battled with fellow number 74 for the lead. Scheffler grabbed the lead and eventually worked his way into lapped traffic. McGrath seemed to find his groove again and worked back up top and to the outside of Scheffler. Scheffler was able to gain some distance through the lapped traffic to win the main event. McGrath had to settle for second with fellow Wild inc. driver Rick Scheffler coming home third. Tom Naeyaert finished fourth.
