Minnesota’s Raceway Park To Close Sept. 1

SHAKOPEE, Minn. — Raceway Park, the longest operating race track in Minnesota, will run its final race Sept. 1.

The quarter-mile asphalt track is being sold to Recovery Technology Systems, a company that has petitioned the city of Shakopee to convert the 10-acre site to a recycling facility. The plan will require the property be rezoned from commercial to heavy industrial.

“This was a difficult decision however, economic conditions leave me no choice but to pursue this avenue,” track owner John Hellendrung said in a post on the track’s website. “I hope for a memorable 2013 and look forward to some great racing and after race gatherings in the pit area.”

Hellendrung reached agreement with RTS to allow the 2013 season to run through Sept. 1, which will be the final event at the track.

Raceway Park opened as a quarter-mile dirt track in 1954 and was paved prior to the 1958 season.
