Sroufe Leads Michigan Indoor Winners


BIRCH RUN, Mich. – The second race of the 2012/2013 Winter Racing Season for the Midwest Indoor Racing Series occurred at the Birch Run Expo Center Saturday as a packed house was on hand to witness 125 teams take on the uniquely shaped 1/11 (0.091) mile flat concrete tri-oval within the South Arena of the massive complex.

MGM Motorsports, based in Eaton Rapids, Mich., once again brought the great fans of the state of Michigan and surrounding Midwestern States quality and affordable Indoors Racing.

The John Belott & Sons Auto Purchasing Winged and Non-Winged Mini Sprints highlighted the historic night and they were joined by Arena / Mini Cup Cars, Legends Cars, Five divisions of Great Lakes Tire Go-Karts and Outlaw Shock Company Quarter Midgets, and three classes of Lawn Mowers for an action packed night highlighted by 17 Feature events in celebration of the Christmas Holiday.

The main event of the evening would be the John Belott & Sons Auto Purchasing Winged Mini Sprints who raced in a thrilling 50-Lap Feature who were going for a $750 to Win payday and also be eligible for a $1,000 bonus if they race and win at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana during the Rumble in Fort Wayne on Saturday, Dec. 29.

When all was said and done, Larwill, Ind., veteran, Larry Sroufe would be the big winner of the night in his No. 211 Sroufe’s Garage entry as he would visit victory lane after race long leader, Tim Neal collided with a lapped car with just two laps to go, which allowed Sroufe to sneak by both machines and take the checkered flag and the chance at a $1,000 bonus in Fort Wayne.

Neal picked up the Fast Qualifier Award with a 6.591 second lap around the unique configuration over the 16-Car field while Sroufe also pocketed a $100 bonus for winning the Four-Car Dash. Mark Zumbrun and Chris Hettinger collected the Qualifier Heat Race victories.

Sroufe’s night was a big one as he also swept the entire night in the John Belott & Sons Auto Purchasing Non-Winged Mini Sprints Feature held earlier in the evening and he was one of Three drivers to pick up Two Feature Wins during the evening. He also set Fast Time for the Non-Winged Mini Sprints with a lap measured at 6.698 and won the Qualifier Heat Race.

7-year-old Chase Burda was also a big winner during the evening as Columbiaville, Mich., driver in his No. 18 Rob’s Service machine scored the Feature Wins in both the Outlaw Shock Company Quarter Midgets Junior Honda & Light 160 main events of the evening. He also won his Qualifier Heat Race in the Junior Hondas while 9-year-old Connor Zbozien was the Light 160 Qualifier Heat Race victor.

One more driver collected dual Feature Wins as Wyoming, Michigan teenager, 14-year-old Renton Joling scored triumphs in both the Outlaw Shock Company Quarter Midgets Senior Honda and Heavy 160 Features. He also swept both divisions nights as he also picked up the Checkered Flags in both Qualifier Heat Races for both divisions in his No. 0 Joling Motorsports entries.

In the final Outlaw Shock Company Quarter Midgets division, the Junior Animals division would see 8-year-old Casey Smith in his No. 00 Rusty Schlenk Racecars machine take the Feature Win back home with him to Portland, Michigan. He also picked up the victory in the divisions’ Qualifier Heat Race as well to sweep the program. All five of the Outlaw Shock Company Quarter Midget Divisions did not Qualify and Drew for their Qualifier Heat Race starting positions.

The Arena / Mini Cup Cars would see a repeat winner from the inaugural MIRS events at the Perani Arena & Events Center in Flint, Michigan back on November 3rd as Scott Quaal held off a hard-charging Todd Cowan to visit Victory Lane for the second time in two starts in his No. 1 K-R Metal Engineering / Chevrolet. The Bridgeport, Michigan native also set Fast Time in Qualifying with an 8.133 over the Nine-Car field and won his Qualifier Heat Race. Ronnie Smith scored the win in the Second Qualifier Heat Race.

The Legends Cars made their first appearance in a MIRS sanctioned event as drivers from both the Michigan Legends Series and Bishop Performance Legends Club participated with 17-year-old Loren Short sweeping the entire night as he set was the quickest car in Qualifying with a 7.382. Then the Clio, Michigan driver won the Qualifier Heat Race and finally he steered his No. 3 Sand’s Auto / Ford into Victory Lane after winning the Feature.

There were Five Divisions of Great Lakes Tire Go-Karts and the fastest machines in Birch Run, Michigan would be the Open Division as 20-year-old Taylor Tabaszewski held off a hard-charging Aaron Morrison to pick up the Feature Win in her No. 31 Roadside Truck & Trailer Repair kart. Earlier in the evening, Timmy Near established the Overall Birch Run Expo Center Track Record as he turned in a 6.551 second lap and he also won his Qualifier Heat Race. Morrison would win the second Qualifier Heat.

The Go-Karts beginners division, the Purple Plate witnessed 10-year-old Victorya Truemner bring home her second straight Feature triumph in her No. 10 Romeo Ford kart. She also won in Flint, Michigan at the Perani Arena & Events Center back on Nov. 3. 12-year-old Aaron Vincent set Fast Time in Qualifying with a 7.284 over the impressive 12-Kart field and he won his Qualifier Heat Race while 9-year-old Samuel Crawford won the second Qualifier Heat.

In the Gold Plate division, Matthew Jacot picked up the Feature Win in his No. 99 Bennett Engines machine as the 12-year-old from Caro, Mich., originally crossed the start / finish line in second, but the flagged winner was then DQ’ed in Post-Race Tech. 12-year-old Aaron Vincent was the Fast Qualifier for the second time during the day with a 7.110 while and won his Qualifier Heat Race while Jacot score the Win in the second Qualifier Heat event.

The 360 Flat Heads Division would witness 18-year-old Austin Long make the long haul from Warsaw, Indiana worthwhile as he would park his No. 18 Bogg’s Auto kart into Victory Lane after scoring the Feature Win. Leslie Stimac set Fast Time with a 6.724 second lap in Qualifying as Long and 14-year-old Cameron Farley would score the Qualifier Heat Race wins.

The Clones division, the final of five Great Lakes Tire Go-Karts divisions in the building would see Midland, Michigan veteran, Lonnie Letts bring home the Feature Win in his No. 66 entry. He also set Fast Time in Qualifying with a lap measured at a 7.535. 10-year-old Victorya Truemner would pick up the Win in the Qualifier Heat Race.

Finally there were Three divisions of Lawn Mowers racing as well and in the premier Super Modifieds division, Adam Nunn would bring home the Win and complete a clean sweep of all events in the division in his No. 23 Mid-States Bolt & Screw lawn mower. The Mt. Morris, Michigan rider also set Fast Time with an 8.063 second lap in Qualifying and would go on to win the Qualifier Heat Race.

The Lawn Mowers Modifieds division would see Millington, Michigan competitor, Craig Reinert walk away with the Feature Win in his No. 2x Mid-States Bolt & Screw machine. Like Nunn before him, Reinert would also sweep the entire night as he Qualified in at an 8.492 to set Fast Time and he also would pick up the victory in the Qualifier Heat Race.

Lastly, in the Lawn Mowers Stocks division, Comstock Park, Michigan veteran, Eric Corner made the haul from across the state worthwhile as his No. 11 Four Seasons Lawn Mower would visit Victory Lane after winning the Feature. John Lackie was the Fast Qualifier with a 9.751 while Corner would pick up the win in the Qualifier Heat Race.
