HAGERSTOWN, Md. – After Roy Deese Jr. lost the lead to Steve Axtell Jr., it appeared he was destined to finish second Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway, but he battled to retake the lead and stay on top for the final five circuits to post his first win of the season and more importantly, the first triumph for the eight time Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic Late Model Champion and current point leader since Aug. 11, 2012.
Justin Weaver recorded a third triumph in the Malloy Ford Late Model Sportsman feature with Mike Corbin leading the final six circuits for his eighth K.Lynn Management Pure Stock victory. Gary Proctor was back in victory lane for his fifth win in the Mason Dixon Auto Auction Hobby Stocks while Michael Warrenfeltz recorded his first ever win in the Cochran Auctioneers Four Cylinder feature.
The Late Models started with a four car invert with Deese Jr. starting from the pole position and jumping out front as fifth starting Steve Axtell Jr. was quickly into the runner up spot ahead of Bo Feathers and Jason Miller.
Seventh starter Marvin Winters moved into fourth by the third lap and while Axtell took the lead from Deese on the fifth lap and opened a comfortable lead. Deese, Feathers and Winters had a good battle going as Feathers took second on the 11th lap with Winters moving into third three laps later before the first caution came out. Feathers came up lame on the restart as Trever Feathers was now in the picture with Winters dropping to fourth on the restart.
Deese began his assault on Axtell Jr. on the 19th lap and after several attempts, secured the lead on lap 22. He drove on to win over him by .838 of a second.
“I have no idea why I’m here,” Deese said. “The car wasn’t that great. I just finally found something up high. I hate getting passed and after a couple of them passed me, I said ‘I’m going to make the top work or put it in the trees and do something better with the thing.’ I knew Steve was on a softer tire, I pretty much think he was, and we were on a harder tire. I knew not to be impatient early and at the end there the longer I run it, the better it felt. The car got loose on me the biggest part of the race, but that went away. It was a good battle.”
In his quest to break the eight championship tie with Nathan Durboraw and be the overall leader, Deese came into the race with only three points over Winters.
