Cal Runs Away In ‘Volunteer’

September 01 1976.TIFBRISTOL, Tenn. — Cale Yarborough took another step toward his first Winston Cup NASCAR championship Sunday with a runaway victory in the Volunteer 400.

Yarborough’s Holly Farms Chevrolet Monte Carlo took the checkered flag two laps ahead of everyone else in the two hour, eight minute and 59-second race on the high-banked .533-mile Bristol Int’l Speedway.

Second place went to Richard Petty’s STP Dodge while pole starter Darrell Waltrip, in another Chevy Monte Carlo, finished third.

Waltrip led the first 27 laps and was passed by Yarborough, who continued out front the rest of the distance.

America’s hottest road racer, Al Holbert, will drive a Chevrolet built by Banjo Matthews in the National 500 NASCAR Grand National race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

– Kirk Takes ARDC Main

Jim Kirk, driving the Thomas Sesco midget, won Sunday’s ARDC midget feature at Pennsylvania’s Grandview Speedway.
