“If your name is mentioned with Keith Kauffman it doesn‘t even seem real. When we talk about total championships and the wins he has we aren‘t in the same conversation,” Wagner said. “I don‘t think I could ever be the driver he was.”
Wagner has made it clear he can beat anyone, but he is not about to rest on his laurels. He knows there is plenty of room for improvement.
“You have to take a little from everybody and I also watch video to understand how people build speed on a certain corner or lap,” Wagner explained. “The hardest thing when I moved to 410s was putting 25 consistent laps together. I would have a good lap or two, then it was five, then 10. But to be able to do that lap after lap corner to corner was hard.
“You could learn a lot from Greg Hodnett, even just his mannerisms. He was like Tiger Woods, just so dialed in.”
Wagner knows that his father, Anthony Macri and Dewease will be among those he has to beat to win a fifth Port Royal title.
“Night in and night out, Lance has speed,” Wagner said. “When he‘s off and you‘re on you are probably hanging with him. If he‘s on and you‘re not, he‘s gone.”
Wagner is confident but not cocky.
“We recently found more speed at Port and it will be fun to see if we can find even more. After five years with the Zemco team they know what I want and I know what they want,” he added. “You are going to have highs and lows in this sport but I have learned that a lot of that is directly driven by mindset.”
Wagner has a good thing going and he knows it. For his part Tommy Carl said, “It has worked out. I think we are both pretty happy.”
As things stand Carl has been paired with Wagner longer than any previous driver. Saying that aloud is even surprising to him. He likes the energy Logan brings, and marvels at the things he balances in his life. “He‘s a good kid,” Carl said. “And he is definitely wide open.”
