“We pitted next to Glenn Scott when he was racing and we just got to be friends. They were weekly racing guys and we were, too,” Miller said. “Glenn is great. He is one of those guys who could be mad at you, but he just smiles at you instead. They are just a great family and Jake and I are just good buddies. He‘s always in a good mood and I try to keep him in good stuff.”
As the 2021 season progressed, the Scott-Miller combination found real speed. When he won at Paragon, it came as no surprise, but they also began running up front at Lincoln Park. As the year wound down, Scott was in position to claim his fifth Paragon title.
“We didn‘t set out to win a track championship,” he said. “In fact, we got off to a slow start, but then things picked up midyear and we started doing well. Obviously, A. J. Hopkins is tough to beat, but we were within 10 points on the final night and ran second to Shane Cockrum. It turns out that A. J. had some mechanical issues and had to pull off, so we secured it. It was a great feeling because it was Jeff‘s first track championship.”
Miller doesn‘t try to downplay the accomplishment. “It was great,” he said. “In fact, it is still simmering. When I am out in the barn it is still on my mind and it‘s a good feeling.”
The foundation for more success is clearly in place.
“Jeff keeps updating the equipment and Tony Helton with ACE Corp. has been a huge help for us,” Scott explained. “We took the car we had and sat it up in the rafters and Jeff ordered two new DRCs and updated our motors. We would like to travel, but local shows are really tough, too. It‘s just tough to win races now. I think if we‘re up there racing with A. J. Hopkins, Shane Cockrum, Jadon Rodgers and Jake Swanson that means we have got something good going.”
While Scott can dream about doing a full USAC slate, it isn‘t feasible. “We would like to hit some USAC races,” Scott said, “but we aren‘t going to run USAC full time because that‘s not where I am in life. I do want to go places and compete and I do think we can go and make shows because we have the equipment to do so.”
Jake Scott has always been a man on the go. He recalls days when he would compete in a two-hour dirt bike event in the day and race a sprint car that same evening. The fact of the matter is that Scott still gets out and wrestles a kart, and he isn‘t afraid to have a little two-wheel fun as well. However, like others his age it is no longer just about him. His boys, Lucas and Jhett, are following in their parent‘s footsteps. They are deeply involved in sports, and yes, they‘ve been playing in the dirt as well.
Scott realizes that what he may have sacrificed in the racing world pales in comparison to what he has.
“Ashleigh is the key to all of this,” he said. “She holds everything together. We have two great kids. She‘s fantastic. I really can‘t adequately put it into words. I get no grief about racing sprint cars and raising the family at the track. I think our last anniversary was on a Saturday and we took the camper to Putnamville. We stayed there and the next morning the boys had a dirt bike race about 30 minutes from the track. That was our anniversary weekend.”
During the Thanksgiving holiday the Scott family stages an annual kart race, complete with a trophy. That‘s what they do. They‘re a competitive and a tight clan. None of them likes to lose. For Scott there has been plenty of success on the race track and certainly more to come. Make no mistake about it, racing is and will forever be a part of Jake Scott‘s life.
