Joie Chitwood
Better known for his work as a daredevil in the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show, Joie Chitwood was also an accomplished racer. He made seven appearances in the Indianapolis 500 from 1940 to 1950, finishing fifth three times. However, he only finished one of those three races — 1949 — in the car. In 1946 and 1950, Chitwood stepped out of the car midway through the race in favor of relief drivers. Sam Hanks relieved him in 1946 and Tony Bettenhausen finished the race in Chitwood’s car in 1950.
