With most of the motorsports world on hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve decided to highlight some of the sport’s legends on a daily basis. We begin each story within the pages of National Speed Sport News.
Warren Johnson is one of the most successful drivers in the history of the NHRA Pro Stock class.
Known as “The Professor of Pro Stock,” Johnson earned 97 national victories in that division, ranking him first all-time in that class and second in all divisions to Funny Car kingpin John Force.
Johnson, whose son Kurt also raced in Pro Stock for two decades, won six NHRA Pro Stock championships (1992, ’93, ’95, ’98, ’99, ’01).
Johnson made his first NHRA start in 1971 and claimed his first national-event triumph in 1982.
Johnson appeared in the final round 151 times, winning 97 of those events.
The Minnesota native, who has called Georgia home for many years, frequently listed his hobby as “work.”
He was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2015.
Johnson is 76 years old.
