Glory Days: Williams Conquers Paragon

Rip Williams (pictured) got the jump on polesitter Larry Bland and led every lap of the California Racing Ass’n non-winged sprint car feature at Indiana’s Paragon Speedway on May 15, 1992.

But while Williams set the pace throughout, Jack Hewitt gave the crowd at the quarter-mile dirt track thrill after thrill.

Hewitt started last (20th) in the and steadily made his way through the field. He took second on lap 27 and quickly closed on the leader. Hewitt passed Williams in turns one and two on the final lap, but Williams came roaring back entering turn three to beat Hewitt to the checkered flag.

Joe Roush and Randy Kinser also won features during CRA’s three-race stop in Indiana.
