The media and track announcers built it up as the “Farewell Show” for Jeff Gordon, who will move full time to NASCAR racing next season, and USAC racing.
And though Gordon didn’t view it that way, he didn’t let them down either.
Gordon dominated the 18th annual Sammy Sessions Memorial at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway, winning both the USAC midget and sprint car features and the midget semi-feature.
His wins came on a fast weekend of racing at Winchester that saw two track records fall and a new world record established.
Driving Rollie Helmling’s No. 4, Gordon took the lead in the midget feature on lap six and paced the remainder of the 33-lap event on the high-banked half-mile, beating early leader Bob Cicconi to the checkered flag.
Taking the lead from Steve Butler, Gordon drove the No. 4 sprint car to victory, holding off Jim Keeker for the checkered flag.
