1991: An Elite WoO Class

6. Johnny Herrera, Albuquerque, N.M.: Herrera was recognized as the series’ most improved driver during the 1991 World of Outlaws campaign. He’s won more than 140 races, including 17 WoO features, during a career that spans nearly four decades. Herrera often works as a crew chief and occasionally gets behind the wheel.

7. Steve Beitler, Sedro Wooley, Wash.: Beitler was a true road warrior with the World of Outlaws during the 1990s, which prepared him for his current role as the owner and promoter of Skagit Speedway. He was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame as a promoter in 2018.

8. Jimmy Carr, Haney, B.C.: Carr was the WoO rookie of the year in 1991. After hanging up his helmet, he became a very successful team manager and crew chief. Carr recently ventured back to the West Coast where he’s guided Dominic Scelzi to multiple victories this season.

9. Sammy Swindell, Bartlett, Tenn.: Swindell had already earned two of his three series titles when he ran a 49-race WoO schedule in 1991. One of sprint car racing’s best with 394 WoO victories, Swindell also made 32 starts across NASCAR’s top three series. He’s still racing at age 65.

10. Gary Cameron II, Tulsa, Okla.: Cameron is the odd-man-out among this group. The mini sprint graduate gave Jimmy Carr a run for the rookie title during the 1991 season, but it was his only season with the World of Outlaws.

11. Bobby Davis Jr., Memphis, Tenn.: During the 1980s, Davis went from sprint car phenom to World of Outlaws champion, winning 66 WoO races and the 1989 series title. He walked away from racing at age 32 to manage the family business.

12. Bobby Allen, Hanover, Pa.: One of sprint car racing’s original outlaws, Allen won 30 World of Outlaws features and topped the 1990 Knoxville Nationals. He’s still following the circuit at age 77, guiding the careers of his son and grandson.

13. Danny Lasoski, Dover, Mo.: His stats include the 2001 World of Outlaws championship, four Knoxville Nationals victories, 122 WoO triumphs and 11 track titles at Iowa’s Knoxville Raceway. At 62, he’s still turning wrenches as a crew chief.

14. Doug Wolfgang, Sioux Falls, S.D.: Wolfgang’s résumé includes five Knoxville Nationals victories, two Kings Royal wins and 140 World of Outlaws feature triumphs. Badly injured in a 1992 crash, he eventually did some 360 racing before retiring in 1997.

15. Greg Hodnett, Memphis, Tenn.: Hodnett earned a mechanical engineering degree from Memphis State University before becoming a full-time racer. He won more than 250 features, including 20 with the World of Outlaws. Hodnett was killed in a 2018 racing accident.

16. Keith Kauffman, Mifflintown, Pa.: Spending much of his career in central Pennsylvania, Kauff­man earned 18 track championships and notched more than 300 feature victories, including nine with the World of Outlaws. He retired from sprint car racing in 2013.

17. Jac Haudenschild, Wooster, Ohio: “The Wild Child” has been thrilling race fans since 1974. His résumé is highlighted by three Kings Royal victories and three Gold Cup triumphs. The 63-year-old racer plans to retire at the end of the season.

18. Jeff Swindell, Memphis, Tenn.: Swindell earned 51 World of Outlaws feature victories and finished among the top 10 in WoO points 12 times between 1981 and ’99. Today, he operates a motorsports-related business and still competes in select races.

19. Craig Keel, Weedsport, N.Y.: True blue-collar racers, Keel and his father, Dan, spent considerable time traveling with the World of Outlaws during a 30-year career. Keel recorded 67 feature wins, including one WoO triumph. He suffered a fatal heart attack in 2016.

20. Gary Wright, Hooks, Texas: A six-time WoO winner, Wright ran a true outlaw schedule during a career that spanned nearly four decades. He earned multiple NCRA and ASCS titles and scored 127 ASCS National Series victories. He officially retired from driving in 2012. n
