Paul Wolff earned the top qualifying position for Saturday’s Nitto Race of Kings in his No. 1018 Ultra4 machine during action on Wednesday at King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley, Calif.
Wolff, who competes in the 4400 class, has yet to be crowned “King,” though this is not his first time appearing at the legendary off-road event.
“Kept the ball rolling today and managed to snag that No. 1 spot in 4400 qualifying,” Wolff wrote in an Instagram post. “We will be starting on the front row with clean air.”
Jason Scherer, one of seven past “Kings” taking part in the event, slid into second behind Wolff. Bryan Crofts filed into third while last year’s winner, Raul Gomez, enjoyed a solid run in fourth.
Cameron Steele completed the top five.
There are more than 100 entries in the race, which will start at 8 a.m. (PST) on Saturday.
