COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Romain Dumas added to his accolades on top of America’s mountain by winning the Pikes Peak Int’l Hill Climb for the fifth time on Sunday.
The sports car racing veteran battled from behind to claim the overall title in the 102nd running of the prestigious race up the mountain aboard an electric-powered Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck.
Dumas overcame a mechanical issue early in his run to complete the 12.42-mile run up the mountain in 8 minutes and 53.563 seconds.
“The run was very difficult,” recounted Dumas. “I don’t know what happened at the start — the car just switched off completely on its own, it never happened before. I didn’t panic, I just looked at the numbers and everything was looking OK, I made a power cycle on my own and was able to restart.”
Dumas outdistanced Unlimited class winner Christian Merli by nearly 11 seconds for the overall triumph. Merli guided a Wolf Aurobay GB08 in his run up the mountain.
Other class winners included Dani Sordo (Exhibition), Cole Powelson (Open Wheel), David Donohue (Time Attack 1) and Laura Hayes (Pikes Peak GT4 Trophy by Yokohama).
