What To Watch For — July 14-16

The highest-paying week in sprint car racing history, a tight street course in the streets of Toronto and the final NHRA professional race at Bandimere Speedway are among the highlights of the second weekend of July racing card.

Here’s what to watch for.

Big Money

Eldora Speedway, located in rural western Ohio, will be the center of the sprint car racing universe this week, with more than $2 million to be paid out over four days, starting Wednesday.

The main attraction will be Thursday night’s Eldora Million that will pay $1 million to a winner who is fast, daring and probably a little bit lucky. It is the largest payday in sprint car racing history, and only the third dirt-track race to pay seven figures to the winner.

Action continues Friday, with the Kings Royal paying $175,000 to win on Saturday night at the half-mile track owned by Tony Stewart.

 Toronto Streets

Alex Palou will attempt to keep his three-race winning streak alive on the tight 11-turn, 1.786-mile Exhibition Place street course in Toronto.

Eighty-five laps of the tight street course will test drivers stamina and patience in round nine of the NTT IndyCar Series.

The USF 2000, USF Pro 2000 and NASCAR Pinty’s Series will share the card.

Busy Late Models

It’s a busy week for the country’s top dirt late model racers. Both the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and the World of Outlaws Case Construction Late Model Series will be in action.

The Lucas contingent lead by point leader Ricky Thornton Jr. will visit Davenport Speedway on Tuesday, with Friday-Saturday events at Tri-State Speedway in Illinois and Lucas Oil Speedway in Missouri.

The WoO late models visit Kentucky’s Ponderosa Speedway on Friday and Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the DIRTcar Summer Nationals late models are scheduled for five races at five tracks Wednesday through Sunday.

Rocky Mountain Way

The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series will make its final visit to Bandimere Speedway, located near Denver, in Morrison, Colo.

Ironically, the final Dodge Power Brokers NHRA Mile-High Nationals will mark the 65th anniversary of the historic drag strip owned by the Bandimere family.

Located at an elevation of 6,000 feet, the track is affectionately known as Thunder Mountain.

Leah Pruett (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car), Matt Hartford (Pro Stock), and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) won the 2022 event.

Red Bud

First run in 1967, the Redbud 400 at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway is one of the longest-running and most traditional super late model races in the country.

The 57th Redbud 400 at the quarter-mile bullring is race No. 6 on the ASA STARS National Tour schedule. In addition to the country’s best late model racers in the field, the 50th Anniversary Racers Reunion runs in conjunction with the Redbud 400.

Granite State

NASCAR will make its annual summer trek to New England, with a tripleheader card at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Saturday will see the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and the NASCAR Xfinity Series in competition.

While the 1.058-mile oval will host the 20th race of the season for the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday afternoon.

Christopher Bell won last year’s Cup Series race at the Loudon, N.H., track.

Mid-America Midget Week

Four races will make up Mid-America Midget Week for the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship.

Action began Tuesday at Oklahoma’s Red Dirt Speedway and continued Wednesday at Solomon Valley Raceway in Kansas.

Nebraska is up on Friday and Saturday with a two-night visit to Jefferson County Speedway. A $10,000-to-win main event caps off the weekend.
