What To Watch For — April 14-16

All four of North America’s signature racing series will be in action this weekend, signaling the spring racing season is in full bloom.

The NASCAR Cup Series, NTT IndyCar Series, NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series and IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship will all contest signature events on their respective schedules.

Long Beach Grand Prix

The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is one of the most popular events on the NTT IndyCar Series schedule. It will run for the 48th time this weekend with the Indy cars headlining the racing card on the temporary 1.97-mile street circuit through the streets of Long Beach, Calif. Josef Newgarden is the defending winner.

With the IndyCar Series set to race on Sunday, the main attraction on Saturday’s racing card will be round three of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Short-Track Triple

All three NASCAR national series will go short-track racing at Virginia’s Martinsville Speedway this weekend.

While the NASCAR Cup Series will hit the .525-mile for the series’ ninth race of the season on Sunday afternoon, the Xfinity Series will run under the lights on Saturday, with the Craftsman Truck Series taking to the paperclip on Friday evening.

William Byron and Christopher Bell won last year’s Cup Series events at Martinsville.

4-Wide Part 1

Round four of the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series features the first of two consecutive events where four lanes will be used at one time in contrast to the traditional two. The NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will see Pro Stock, Funny Car and Top Fuel headline the weekend.

The second four-wide racing event comes April 29-30, with the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at North Carolina’s zMAX Dragway.

I-55 Doubledip

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series and the Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series will share the bill for two nights of fast and furious open-wheel action at the legendary quarter-mile track at Missouri’s Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.

Both classes will be in action both nights, with the winged sprint cars racing for $10,000 to win each night and the midgets battling for $4,000 on Friday and $5,000 on Saturday.

All Stars & USAC Try Again

After the annual Attica Spring Nationals were postponed by rain and cold last weekend, the All Star Circuit of Champions will look to open their season at the third-mile Attica Raceway Park for two nights of racing paying $6,000 to win each night.

Meanwhile, the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series will make its third attempt to kickoff the Midwest portion of its schedules with events planned Friday at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway and Saturday at Tri-State Speedway.

Asphalt Thunder

Among the top asphalt late model events planned this weekend, will be the third annual Northeast Classic at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The American-Canadian Tour late models headline this event at the one-mile speedway.

The SRL Southwest Tour super late models will journey to Tucson Speedway for the Wild West Shootout that pays $10,000 to win. The event can be seen on SPEED SPORT SPORT affiliate SpearsRacing.tv.
