What 2 Watch For — July 7-9

With the twisty and bumpy street circuit in Chicago behind, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to superspeedway-style racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway, while a special three-night show will headline the week at Macon (Ill.) Speedway.

Here’s what to watch for.

Hot Nights

The NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series makes a summer visit to Atlanta Motor Speedway for a pair of night races at the 1.54-mile track with 28-degree banking that will feature speedway-style drafting.

The Xfinity Series hits the track Saturday night with the Cup Series running at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening, allowing the teams and fans to beat the afternoon heat.

Hell Tour

The DIRTcar Summer Nationals rolls into its fourth week of competition with another six races on the docket.

Jason Feger held a 38-point advantage over Ashton Winger entering Monday’s event, but with a full week ahead both were strong contenders for the title.

Streaking

Ricky Thornton Jr. may be the hottest driver in the country with 20 triumphs on the season. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series point leader will look to keep rolling as the series makes a three-night stop at Minnesota’s Deer Creek Speedway for the Gopher 50. Twelve of Thornton’s victories this year have come in the Lucas-backed series.

Macon Money

Three nights of racing await fans at Macon Speedway this week, with the 43rd annual Herald & Review 100 kicking things off on Thursday night with the DIRTcar Summer Nationals late models and modifieds in competition.

On Saturday and Sunday, the fifth-mile dirt track will host the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series for the first time, with $10,000 earmarked for Saturday night’s feature winner.

Other Sprints

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Car Series will visit Iowa’s 34 Raceway on Friday at Wilmot (Wis.) Raceway on Saturday.

The All Star Circuit of Champions winged sprint cars top at Ransomville (N.Y.) Speedway on Friday, and head to Ohio’s Sharon Speedway the following night for the Lou Blaney Memorial race.

Finally, the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Series will have a two-night stand at Dodge City (Kan.) Raceway Park.

North Of The Border

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship makes its annual trek to Canada for a weekend of racing at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. The 2.459-mile, 10-turn permanent road course will challenge the hybrid GTP competitors and the GT contingent as well. The Michelin Pilot Challenge series is also on the card, taking center stage on Saturday.
