It’s time for a new edition of SPEED SPORT Power Rankings. Who will be on top this week?
1. Jett Lawrence
Monster Energy AMA Supercross point leader Jett Lawrence returned to the top of the power rankings after his second consecutive victory and seventh of the season Saturday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. With the heat on, Lawrence has risen to the occasion with consecutive triumphs, extending his point lead with three races remaining. Last Week: 3
2. Max Verstappen
With four victories in five Formula 1 races this season, Max Verstappen leads the world’s most popular racing series to its first of three visits to the United States with this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix. Verstappen is the defending winner of the Miami event, having won the event from ninth starting position. Last Week: 1
3. Anthony Macri
Pennsylvania sprint car racer Anthony Macri picked up two more victories over the weekend, giving him a national-best seven winged sprint car victories this season. Macri is in mid-season form as the World of Outlaws tour the Keystone State May 8-11. Last Week: 5
4. Denny Hamlin
Denny Hamlin jumped back into the power rankings after earning his third NASCAR Cup Series triumph of the season Sunday at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway. The Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver took control late in the running to collect the 54th victory of his career and move to fourth in the standings. Last Week: Not Ranked.
5. Ricky Thornton Jr.
Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series point leader Ricky Thornton Jr. won a pair of series features at Georgetown (Del.) Speedway at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway, giving him five Lucas late model wins and eight overall triumphs this season. Off to a slow start based his standards of last season, Thornton is winding into winning form as the weather heats up. Last Week: Not Ranked.
6. Greg Anderson
Five-time NHRA Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson has served notice he has every intention of winning that sixth title this season. Anderson became the first driver in the class to win twice this year when he topped Sunday’s Four-Wide Nationals at North Carolina’s zMAX Dragway. It was Anderson’s 105th career victory. 7. Justin Ashley
Second-generation NHRA Top Fuel racer Justin Ashley blasted to his first Four-Wide Nationals triumph Sunday at zMAX Dragway and extended his points lead with what was his second victory in the first five races of the campaign. Last Week: Not Ranked.
8. Corey Day
Eighteen-year-old Corey Day picked up his third High Limit Racing sprint car triumph of the season last week at Riverside Int’l Speedway in West Memphis, Ark. Day, who won the NARC 410 sprint car title last year, appears poised to contend with veterans Brad Sweet and Tyler Courtney for the High Limit crown. Last Week: Not Ranked.
9. Connor Zilisch
Another 18-year-old, Connor Zilisch continued to press with his racing diversity. Zilisch earned his first ARCA Menards Series East triumph Friday at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway. Zilisch, who also won a recent CARS Tour race, co-drove to victory in the LMP2 class at the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Last Week: Not Ranked.
10. William Byron
William Byron’s run of consistency came to a screeching halt with a crash and a 33rd-place finish in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover, Del. But with three Cup Series victories on the season, the Hendrick Motorsports remains in the power rankings this week, falling to 10th. Last Week: 2
On The Rise: Denny Hamlin used his third NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season to vault to fourth in the standings, while Jett Lawreence won his second consecutive Supercross race and returned to the top of the power rankings.
Free Falling: Brad Sweet, Doug Kalitta, David Gravel, Alex Palou and Bobby Pierce all dropped from the top 10 this week. Kalitta had a solid run in NHRA action, while rain plagued the racing schedules for Sweet, Gravel and Pierce.
One To Watch: With the World of Outlaws sprint cars and the USAC sprint cars sharing the bill at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway this weekend, Brady Bacon is expected to do double duty racing with a wing with the Outlaws and guiding his non-winged sprint car in USAC competition.
