The inaugural Miami Grand Prix will be staged in May next year, according to Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
The fates of many of the remaining races this season remain unknown due to the pandemic, but F-1 is already organizing the 2022 schedule.
“We are less than halfway through the 2021 season, but planning 2022 has been ongoing for some time,” Domenicali said during a conference call with Wall Street investors.
“There is a high demand from venues to make the 2022 calendar,” he added, “and we hope to announce the provisional calendar in September.
“We can confirm that the much-anticipated Miami Grand Prix will happen in the first half of May. Demand for these tickets is high, even though sales have not officially started.”
The 2022 Monaco Grand Prix is scheduled for May 29. The Canadian Grand Prix is traditionally held on the second of June. This means that the F-1 teams would have to make two separate trips to North America — to Miami and Montreal — in just a few weeks. And then come back in October for the races in Texas and Mexico.
The heat and humidity can be insufferable in Miami in the middle of the summer, so it makes sense for the race date to be in early May.
