Lewis Hamilton topped Friday’s FP2 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ahead of Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix.
FP2 was extended by 30 minutes after the first practice session was cut short due to CCTV issues.
Hamilton had the fastest time of 1:13.718 seconds, narrowly edging teammate George Russell by 0.027 seconds.
“It was a strange day with the issues in FP1,” Hamilton said. “I felt really bad for all the fans out there; we’ve had a great crowd out here since yesterday and the city’s been pumping. I’m glad that we got out there eventually though and it was good to have a 90-minute session. We haven’t had one of them in a long time!”
Two red flags and rain in the final 10 minutes disrupted the flow of the session multiple times.
The first red flag came due to smoke coming from the rear of Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas F-1 machine. Shortly after, Esteban Ocon was instructed to halt on the track with a suspected loss of water pressure.
Ferrari locked down two top five positions in practice with Carlos Sainz in third and Charles Leclerc in fifth.
Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso ended the session in fourth.
Points leader Max Verstappen struggled in FP2, finishing sixth.
“It wasn’t a straightforward day with basically no running in FP1, it was the same for everyone though,” Verstappen said. “At least we could get in a decent amount of running in FP2. I think we still have quite a bit of work to do as the car isn’t fantastic at the moment over the bumps and curbs.
“I mean it’s still not too bad, but we definitely need to fine tune a few things. I think it might be raining tomorrow which will throw a few surprises out there in qualifying, then perhaps dry on Sunday so that will also affect things. It was a tricky session but sometimes we have those days.”
